OKLAHOMA 3, AZ ST 2
The 5th-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club controlled the flow of play for the vast majority of the game but could only slip three goals past a hot goalie for Arizona State on Friday evening in Scottsdale, Arizona. Fortunately for the Sooners, goaltender Chad Helgason (Woodbury, MN) was more than up to the task as he denied all but two ASU shots to secure a 3-2 OU win and set the single season OU Hockey record for wins by a goaltender with 17. After a flurry of activity in front of the Sun Devils' net, forward Justin King (DeWitt, MI) knocked the puck in while on the power play at the 7:05 mark of the first period to put the Sooners up 1-0. ASU scored two goals in 40 seconds before the period ended to take a 2-1 lead to the first intermission. In the second period, King tied the game at 8:47 and forward Owen Brewer (Kenai, AK) scored the ultimate game-winner at the 10:11 mark to give OU a 3-2 lead. The Sooners did their best to try to let ASU tie the game up by offering up six power plays after OU took the lead but the Oklahoma defense held off the Sun Devils' power play to preserve the victory. Helgason stopped 26 of 28 ASU shots tonight. Sun Devils goaltender marc Schacker was bombarded with 59 OU shots on the evening. Oklahoma was 1 for 3 on the power play while ASU was 1 for 7 with the man advantage. With the win, Oklahoma's record improves to 26-7-2 while Arizona State now has a record of 14-16-1. Oklahoma stays in Tempe for the second game of the weekend against Arizona State on Saturday night.

Playing with only 15 skaters, the 5th-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club gutted out a nice 4-1 win over Arizona State on Saturday evening in Scottsdale, Arizona. Only 20 players made this road trip to the Grand Canyon State, three of them goalies, as exams, reports and nagging injuries forced OU to travel without a full roster this weekend. Take out two guys that got dinged up in Friday night's game and that left 15 skaters available to Head Coach Tom Murphy for this evening's game. ASU recognized the Sooners were playing with a short bench and came out firing early and often. However, the Sooners held fast and the first period ended with no scoring from either team. In the second, forward Ryan Kenney (Scottsdale, AZ) got the Sooners on the board first when he scored from within the midst of a scrum at the right side of the ASU net at the 2:22 mark. Kenney's shot actually passed under the right side of the ASU net when the Sun Devils goaltender lifted the net off its moorings with his back but, despite protests from the ASU bench, the referee allowed the goal to stand. Forward Doug Gebbie (Frisco, TX) increased the OU lead when he scored almost three minutes later to make it a 2-0 game. The Sun Devils scored to tighten the game at 2-1 but Gebbie countered just 19 seconds later with his second goal of the evening at 17:31 of the period to restore OU's two goal lead. While on the power play late in the game, forward Kyle Allan (Flagstaff, AZ) scored his 30th goal of the season at the 14:52 mark of the third period to give OU a comfortable three-goal cushion. ASU tried to muster some offense but the short Sooners' bench refused to turn the momentum over to the Sun Devils and controlled the flow of play until the final buzzer sounded. Sooners goaltender Matt Pombo (Allen, TX) stopped 30 of 31 Arizona State shots tonight. Sun Devils goaltender Marc Schacker had another busy evening in net, stopping 48 of 52 OU shots. Oklahoma was an efficient 2 for 3 on the power play while ASU was shut out in all three man advantage situations they had in the game. Oklahoma completes the five-game season sweep of Arizona State and improves the record to 27-7-2. Arizona State finishes its season with a 14-17-1 record. Oklahoma heads up I-17 for a late Sunday morning game in Flagstaff against the No. 1-ranked team in the ACHA D3 Pacific Region, the Ice Jacks of Northern Arizona University.

Playing its third game in three days, the 5th-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club stopped off in Flagstaff, Arizona, the hometown of forward Kyle Allan and defenseman Trevor Hallberg, and beat the Northern Arizona University Ice Jacks by the score of 12-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Ice Jacks are the No. 1-ranked team in the ACHA D3 Pacific Region and were using today's game as a tune-up for their run in the D3 Nationals which begin this Wednesday in Rochester, NY. However, the Sooners proved to be too fast and too powerful from the get-go. Forward Blake Martin (Anchorage, AK) scored just 1:32 into the game to give OU an early 1-0 lead. Forward Jesse Bryant (Anchorage, AK) scored the next two goals and Martin added two more before the end of the period to complete his first period hat trick. After the first intermission, NAU came out firing and scored to make the score 5-1. However, the Sooners got goals from forwards Justin King (DeWitt, MI), Ryan Kenney (Scottsdale, AZ) and Doug Gebbie (Frisco, TX) in the second period to make the score 8-1 at the end of 40 minutes of play. Allan scored for the Sooners just over three minutes into the third period before his family and hometown friends to bump the score to 9-1. Bryant, Martin and defenseman Robert Hetrick (Tulsa, OK) added goals before the end of the game to finish off a 12-1 victory before getting back out on the road to head home to Norman. Martin ended up with four goals and four assists for eight total points. In doing so, Martin set an OU Hockey record for most points in a game with 8, breaking the old record of 7 points in a game set by former Sooner Jeff Janes (vs. Kansas, December 5, 2003) and current defenseman Greg Smith (Irvine, CA, vs. North Dakota State, October 3, 2008). Martin also tied the OU Hockey record for most goals in a game with four, joining former Sooners Dan Carmody (vs. Texas, October 24, 2003); Justin Hall (vs. Texas, October 24, 2003; vs. Kansas, December 6, 2003; and @ SW Missouri State, December 3, 2004); Jeff Luther (vs. Kansas, December 5, 2003); and current forward Adrian Borchgrevink (Kenai, AK, vs. Mo. State, December 2, 2006) in the OU Hockey record book. Sooners goaltender Colin Sablotny (Plano, TX) stopped 26 of 27 Northern Arizona shots today. NAU goaltender Matt Williams was put in a difficult position, having to fill in for starting goaltender Nate Baier who went down in warm-ups with a torn MCL. Williams was under attack all afternoon and ended up stopping 47 of 59 OU shots. Oklahoma was 1 for 1 on the power play while NAU was 0 for 3 with the man advantage. Oklahoma's record is now 28-7-2 while NAU now has a record of 20-7-0. The Sooners next play in an NHL/ACHA doubleheader on Sunday, March 8th in Dallas at the American Airlines Center.
