OKLAHOMA 2, IOWA STATE 1 The 6th-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club forgot to show up for the first period against No. 7 Iowa State but turned things around with a dominating second period to skate away with a 2-1 come-from-behind win over the Cyclones on Friday night in Oklahoma City. The Cyclones took full advantage of OU not being ready to play in the first period as they outworked, outhustled and otherwise pounded the Sooners. Iowa State peppered the OU net with 11 shots on goal while OU could only muster four shots in the same frame. ISU got on the board early with an even-strength goal at the 8:26 mark to take a 1-0 lead over the Sooners. The score could have been worse for OU had it not been for the solid goaltending effort of Chad Helgason (Woodbury, MN). Despite Iowa State having three power plays in the period, Helgason and the Sooners defense kept ISU from adding to its lead before the first intermission.
The second period saw an entire reversal of fortune for both teams as Oklahoma came out flying and Iowa State looked flat. Forward Jason Zawacki (Plano, TX) tied the game with a laser shot from the top of the right circle at 6:50 of the middle stanza. Forward Kyle Allan (Flagstaff, AZ) put the Sooners on top 2-1 at 14:52 of the period with a tight angle shot that found its way into the net between the goalpost and ISU goalkeeper. In the third period, both teams exhausted a power play chance but no scoring was to be had. The final period was almost dull as the two teams basically traded shots back and forth while waiting for the final buzzer to sound. Thankfully, when the buzzer did signal the end of the game, the Sooners' two-goal second period turned out to be the difference as the final was 2-1 in favor of Oklahoma. Sooners goaltender Helgason earned his 8th win of the season as he stopped 20 of 21 shots from the Cyclones. Iowa State goalie Erik Hudson stopped 20 of 22 OU shots he faced. Both teams went 0 for 4 on the power play. Oklahoma improves to 13-2-0 while Iowa State now has a record of 15-3-1 on the season. The same two teams meet again Saturday afternoon at the Blazers Ice Centre at a special time, 4:30 PM, due to the OU/Texas Tech football game in Norman later that evening.

OKLAHOMA 5, IOWA STATE 4 The 6th-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club completed the weekend sweep of No. 7 Iowa State with a hard-fought 5-4 victory over the Cyclones on Saturday afternoon in Oklahoma City. Oklahoma struck first with a goal at the 2:05 mark of the first period from forward Justin King (DeWitt, MI) on a little flick shot that found its way between the right goalpost and the Iowa State goalie. The Cyclones scored a power play goal less than a minute later to tie the game and took a 2-1 lead with a short-handed tally less than five minutes into the game. Forward Kyle Allan (Flagstaff, AZ) tied the game with a nasty slapshot from the left circle that found its way into the top right corner of the ISU net at 15:31 of the first period. Defenseman Austin Miller (Dallas, TX) scored on a cannon blast of a shot just five seconds after OU went on the power play at 17:05 of the period to put OU up 3-2.
In the second period, King scored his second goal of the game at the 5:36 mark to give Oklahoma a 4-2 lead. It appeared as if that was going to be the only score of the period but the Cyclones scored a power play goal with four ticks of the clock left to send both teams to the second intermission with the score 4-3. Forward Doug Gebbie (Frisco, TX) scored on a slapper from between the hash marks at 4:43 of the third period to restore the Sooners to a two-goal lead at 5-3. Gebbie's goal turned out to be the game-winner as the Cyclones tightened the game with just over two minutes to go to make it a 5-4 affair. Iowa State pulled their goaltender with less than a minute to go to try to force overtime but the Sooners' defense prevailed to preserve the win and weekend sweep. Sooners goaltender Chad Helgason (Woodbury, MN) stopped 23 of 27 shots from the Cyclones on the way to his 9th win of the season. Iowa State goalie Erik Hudson stopped 19 of 24 OU shots he faced.
