OKLAHOMA 5, AZ STATE 1

The 6th-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club returned home for the first time since the beginning of the month and beat Arizona State 5-1 on Friday night in Oklahoma City.

Forward Doug Gebbie (Frisco, TX) scored the first goal of the game when he let a shot rip from the slot into the ASU net at the 10:33 mark of the first to give OU a 1-0 lead.  Two minutes later, OU goaltender Chad Helgason (Woodbury, MN) mishandled an ASU dump-in and lost track of the puck in his own crease.  A Sun Devil swooped in on Helgason's miscue and took a few hacks and whacks at the loose puck before finally connecting to tie the game at 1-1.  In the second period, Gebbie scored his second goal of the night, this one on the power play at 7:03, to put the Sooners on top 2-1.  Forward Daniel Siira (Anchorage, AK) scored less than two minutes later to give the Sooners a two goal cushion.  Just sixteen seconds into the third period, forward Owen Brewer (Kenai, AKcapitalized on an ASU penalty that carried over from the second period to put OU up 4-1.  Forward Sean McCauley (Naperville, IL) added another power play tally at 7:14 to give OU a 5-1 lead, which held to the end of the game.

Helgason made his third consecutive start and saw 19 shots from the Sun Devils, stopping all but the one flub that led to ASU's goal.  ASU goalie Marc Schacker stopped 47 of 52 shots.  Oklahoma's power play was on fire, going 3 for 6, while ASU was shut out during all nine of their man advantage opportunities.

The win brings Oklahoma's record to 8-1-0 while Arizona State suffers its first loss of the season and now has a 4-1-0 record.

OKLAHOMA 7AZ STATE 3

The 6th-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club started out strong, took some time off and then finished strong on Saturday night on their way to a 7-3 victory over Arizona State on Saturday night in Oklahoma City.

The Sooners got on the board early with a goal from forward Keith Denton (Vail, CO) who banged in a rebound at 5:37 to give OU a quick 1-0 lead.  Forward Adrian Borchgrevink (Kenai, AK) scored on the power play at 11:32 and as did forward Kyle Allan (Flagstaff, AZ) who scored with just under a minute to go in the period to send the Sooners to the locker room with a 3-0 lead.  The Sooners got sloppy and complacent in the second period and ended up paying the price as ASU made the most of an OU defensive giveaway and scored to get within two goals.  However, defenseman Blake Johnson (Oklahoma City, OK) showed some adept puckhandling skills and excited the crowd as he gathered the disc at the red line and dangled his way to the ASU net before roofing the puck into the goal to put OU up 4-1 at the 18:40 mark of the second period.  In the third period, forward Owen Brewer (Kenai, AKscored to give OU a 5-1 lead and it looked like the rout was on.  Capitalizing on a rash of Sooners penalties, ASU scored two power play goals to tighten the game at 5-3.  However, the Sooners countered with two power play goals late in the game, one from Borchgrevink and one from forward Daryl Dee (Garland, TX), to restore the four-goal lead and secure the 7-3 win for Oklahoma.

Sooners goaltender Chad Helgason (Woodbury, MN) won his fourth game in a row while stopping 15 of 18 shots.  ASU goalie Marc Schacker stopped 15 of 22 shots.  Oklahoma's power play continued to roll, going 4 for 8, while ASU was 2 for 10 with the man advantage.

With the weekend sweep, Oklahoma improves to 9-1-0 while Arizona State drops to 4-2-0 on the season.
