OKLAHOMA 5LIBERTY 1

The 6th-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club started the season on the road against a tough opponent, No. 4 Liberty, and offered a glimpse of how good they may be this season with a nice 5-1 road win over the Flames.

The Sooners struck first when forward Sean McCauley (Naperville, IL) converted on a Liberty turnover deep in their own end at 12:45 of the first period to give OU a 1-0 lead, which would last to the first intermission.  Liberty tied the game just forty seconds into the second period on a shorthanded goal.  Forward Kyle Allan (Flagstaff, AZ) scored the first of two goals on the evening as he tipped in an Austin Miller (Dallas, TX) power play blast from the point at 8:03 of the second to put the Sooners in front by one.  Play got a bit chippy toward the end of the second period as two players from each team were invited to spend a few minutes in the penalty box after getting a little too friendly with one another.

In the third period, the Sooners swarmed Liberty's defense.  Allan scored his second goal of the night just over a minute into the period to put OU up 3-1.  Forward Owen Brewer (Kenai, AK) scored on a sweet backhand at 4:59 of the period and forward Doug Gebbie (Frisco, TX) salted the game away with a breakaway goal at the 10:15 mark of the third.  With the egos bruised and battered on the scoreboard, and after one of their teammates was carried off the ice on a stretcher as a precautionary measure resulting from a hard Sooners check in the corner, Liberty's players took umbrage and engaged the Sooners in some extracurricular physicalities.  Brewer and fellow forward Dan Rombach (North Richland Hills, TX) received game DQ's for their part in one of two melees that occurred on the ice as the third period limped to a close. Three Liberty players received similar penalties.  Tempers eventually calmed enough to allow the prolonged third period and the game to finally come to an end.

Oklahoma goaltender
Chad Helgason (Woodbury, MNalmost needed to bring a book to the rink tonight as he faced only 14 shots during the entire game, stopping all but one.  Liberty goalie Colin Way will see crimson, cream and vulcanized rubber in his sleep tonight as he was pelted with 43 official shots from the swarming Sooners
.
Oklahoma scored once on the power play but allowed a shorthanded goal while Liberty was shut out on their power play chances.

LIBERTY 6,
OKLAHOMA 2

The 6
th-ranked University of Oklahoma®
Hockey club found out the hard way Saturday night that what goes around usually comes around as No. 4 Liberty blasted the Sooners 6-2 in Lynchburg, Virginia

Liberty scored twice within the first six minutes of the contest to take a quick 2-0 lead on the Sooners.  Defenseman Austin Miller (Dallas, TXscored on a power play blast at 11:29 to close the gap to one but Liberty scored again with eight seconds to go in the period to take a 3-1 lead to the locker room.  Liberty scored twice more in the second period to chase OU starting goaltender Matt Pombo (Allen, TX), who was replaced in net by Chad Helgason (Woodbury, MN).

Shortly after the five minute mark of the third period, Liberty blasted a rocket past Helgason to take a 6-1 lead and immediately thereafter all ten skaters on the ice paired off.  After some issues on and off the ice, the ten were escorted to their respective locker rooms and play resumed on the ice.  Defenseman Greg Smith (Irvine, CA) would eventually net a goal for OU on the power play but the damage was done as the final score ended 6-2 in favor of the Flames

Oklahoma goaltender Pombo stopped 4 of 9 Liberty shots while Helgason ended up making 8 of 9 saves while in net.  Liberty goalie Colin Way was glad to see the Sooners leave town as he endured a 53 shot barrage from Oklahoma, stopping all but two of the shots.  Oklahoma scored twice on the power play while Liberty had three power play goals.

With the weekend split, both Oklahoma and Liberty have records of 1-1-0.  Oklahoma travels to Lubbock next weekend for a pair of games against D2 Texas Tech.
